05-22-2023 03:44On Monday, August 28th, around 3:30pm, I went to the Perth City Cotton On store with my sister. What should have been a simple shopping trip turned into a nightmare. As I browsed the kids' section looking for a gift for my baby sister using a gift card I received for Christmas, a mid-20s Asian girl started giving me uncomfortable stares. That was just the beginning. When I checked up on my sister in the fitting section, a mid-20s white blonde girl approached me with an aggression I couldn't fathom. She accused me of stealing, targeting me out of nowhere. She fixated on a pair of black tights that I hadn't even looked at, let alone taken. Her relentless accusations and berating were suffocating. She went on and on, saying things like, Just give it back, ‘’Stop acting dumb’’ and, We have microphones; we can hear everything. She was rude, certain of my guilt, and totally disrespectful. No matter how much I protested, how much I offered to let her search my bag, she kept talking over me, accusing me, gaslighting me. How was I supposed to give back something I never took? The situation escalated as she threatened to review the security camera footage. I had to wait a frustrating 20 minutes, only for them to find nothing incriminating. They had wrongly accused me, wasting my time and embarrassing me in front of others. The final blow was a half-hearted, Sorry, you can leave now. This is not right. They made a 13 year old girl feel like a criminal when I have never stolen anything in my life. I'm angry I had to prove my innocence for something I didn't do. It was humiliating, unfair, and completely uncalled for. I'm fully aware that this store often have to deal with shoplifting, but the way this situation was handled was completely out of line. As I have high anxiety, having other people watching and possibly assuming the worst about me, this is the most distressing situation Ive been in. I am incredibly dissatisfied with how this was handled, and the anger I feel is justified. I wish I had been given a chance to defend myself properly, because I know for a fact that I did nothing wrong.
